State of the Port of Tampa
TAMPA, Fla.—With a crowd of about 300 port stakeholders, community leaders and elected officials on hand at Port Tampa Bay’s Cruise Terminal 2 today, leaders of the state’s largest port recapped a successful year of partnerships and economic development, while providing a road map for future business and infrastructure plans that are poised to ensure economic might and job growth in the years ahead.
The annual State of the Port address is the port’s authority’s opportunity to share highlights and important statistics about cargo movement and financial activity that represents the port’s diverse lines of business, including cargo, cruise and ship building/repair. Paul Anderson, port president and CEO, hosted the event and delivered his annual comprehensive address, which included video excerpts of port activity and testimonials by some of the port’s biggest customers, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Hillsborough County Commission Chairwoman Sandy Murman.
Historically, the presentation serves to recap the last year of operations and to deliver the port authority’s vision for the future. Port Tampa Bay works in collaboration with a bevy of economic development agencies, as well as local, state and federal governments to effectively bring prosperity, jobs and added value to the Tampa Bay region and the state.
“Our plans for diversifying and expanding our lines of business and our infrastructure, as well as new business opportunities, all with a backdrop of an expanded Panama Canal and the opportunities in Latin America—all of it coming into focus, getting closer and clearer. The port’s generational projects and engagement will continue to leave a lasting and positive legacy,” Anderson said. “Our main mission is to create an environment for sustainable economic growth and job creation by leveraging our assets while positioning our community and our state for a bright and prosperous future.”
Immediately prior to the port event, Paul Anderson and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that serves to connect the two port administrations together in working toward common goals, moving ahead. This type of partnering and regionalism has become a welcome trend in Tampa Bay and Central Florida, and Port Tampa Bay is proud to play a leadership role in collaborative efforts that will create positive results and economic value. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn touted the joint agreement as yet another step Tampa Bay has taken toward working together without barriers or political division.

New ship sailing from Port Tampa Bay
Pictured, L to R: Vision of the Seas docks at Cruise Terminal 2 at Port Tampa Bay. Pat Allman, port commissioner, and Paul Anderson, port president/CEO, welcome Lis Lauritzen, captain (center) and crew of Vision of the Seas, upon its maiden call at her new home port, Saturday, November 22. With tug boat fanfare, Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas departs the Tampa harbor after her maiden call to home port, Port Tampa Bay, November 22.
TAMPA, Fla.—As part of the continuing kickoff of a busy 2014/2015 cruise season for Port Tampa Bay, port officials welcomed Royal Caribbean International’s cruise ship Vision of the Seas—which will home port in Tampa concurrent with Brilliance of the Seas—in a plaque exchange with the ship’s captain in a ceremony Saturday, November 22.
Last year, Port Tampa Bay and Royal Caribbean International announced that the cruise line would be deploying a second ship at the Port Tampa Bay, marking the first time the cruise line would have two ships in Tampa simultaneously. Up to now, Royal Caribbean has been operating one ship at Port Tampa Bay, during winter cruise seasons, since January 2002. Brilliance of the Seas, which sails seasonally four- and five-night Western Caribbean cruises, is now joined by Vision of the Seas, which offers seven-night Western Caribbean cruises, sailing from Tampa throughout winter 2014-15.
“It is extremely exciting to see Royal Caribbean International’s continued support of the Tampa cruise market by adding an additional vessel to our thriving home port. Royal Caribbean is a very important partner, offering a quality cruise experience to their guests and significant economic value to the port and our region,” Paul Anderson, port president and CEO, said.
Vision of the Seas will sail every Saturday from Tampa to destinations in the Western Caribbean, including Grand Cayman, Cozumel (MX), Costa Maya (MX), Roatan (Honduras) or Belize. The 915-foot ship has a capacity of 2,000 guests, double occupancy, and a crew of 742. Previously announced, Brilliance of the Seas also will sail from Tampa on four-night cruises to Cozumel and five-night Cozumel itineraries, which additionally call at Grand Cayman or Key West.
A total of six cruise ships will now be home ported in Tampa, and, counting port of call visits, this will be the busiest winter cruise season in history of Port Tampa Bay, say port officials.
